The Power of the Mind in Healing

Mindset, I have discovered, plays a huge role in our quality of life whilst battling cancer. A healthy, positive mind will help us to get through the hard times we will inevitably encounter during a cancer fight. By focusing on gratitude and avoiding victimhood mentality is key in my opinion to keep putting one foot in front of the other and being in control of your choices.

It goes deeper than that. When confronted with a diagnosis as serious as a deadly cancer, the immediate and instinctive feeling is: I don’t want to die. That fear naturally sparks a will to live, a readiness to fight. But this is where I believe a shift in mindset is essential. Rather than focusing solely on the fight, we must reframe the experience, shifting the emphasis from fighting death to choosing life.

It’s about more than survival. It’s about learning how to truly live. Finding fulfilment, falling in love with life again, being present, and making space each day for joy. These feelings aren’t just comforting, they’re profoundly healing.

People often talk about manifesting, and while not everyone believes in it, I can only speak from my own experience. From the day I was told I had 12 to 18 months to live, I rejected that prognosis entirely. I began planning a future with complete disregard for the idea that I wouldn’t be around to see it. That defiance wasn’t denial, it was an act of devotion to life itself. You will find this common trait in many of the ECAPS (exceptional cancer patients - a term given to people having unexpected long survival times or experiencing remission despite a dyer prognosis) that they find a purpose to truly live for, a goal set in the future and working towards it each day is a powerful way pushing back on cancer in a positive and soul fulfilling way.

There are studies to show that mental states, particularly goal driven behaviour and hope, influence immune biomarkers such as NK cell activity, inflammatory cytokines and T cell response & patients with future oriented mindset and purpose show better immune resilience in chronic illness including cancer.

MINDSET

There is now plenty of science proving the mind body connection and how our thoughts literally can affect our biology.

Here is some science on the matter:

  • Mind-Body Connection

    • Stress Response
    • Relaxation Response
  • Neuroplasticity

    • Meditation and Mindfulness
    • Positive Thinking

  • PNI

    • Psychoneuroimmunology
    • Immune Function
    • Placebo Effect
  • Epigenetics

    • Thoughts-Gene Expression
    • Telomere Health

My biggest message to anyone on a cancer journey is to be your own advocate.

The Science of Mindfulness

When I first started out on this journey when I knew I had to take the drivers seat in the fight against cancer I took to reading all the books that really teach you about what cancer really is and how to actually treat it to heal yourself as opposed to treating the symptom of the dysfunction in your body - the cancer; but getting to the root cause of the dis-ease in your body and one of the books that was recommended to me was ‘you are the placebo’ by Dr Joe Dispenza and it was and still is an absolute game-changer.

The authors story alone is enough to make you stop and think about the unimaginable powers of our minds and our bodies ability to heal, the book itself goes on to illustrate countless ‘miracles’ of people healing supposedly incurable conditions just by using the power of their minds. It also demonstrates the science and the power behind the placebo effect and I can categorically say that all I learned from that book and Dr Joes dispenzas story and all of his other work he has out there in his various books and podcasts he has been a guest on had been a huge contributing factor to me living many years beyond my prognosis and what continues to drive me forward.

I HIGHLY recommend everyone to read it. I read it and then listened to the audiobook to ensure the message was well and truly sunken in.

After learning about the power of the mind and our thoughts, it then led me to realize the benefits of reading lots of positive stories of people who have overcome a stage 4 diagnosis when all the odds are against them and are convinced by their doctors that there is absolutely no hope and its a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if’ the disease will kill you.

This is what I find frighteningly scary about the medical professionals, the placebo effect is very real, therefore the dangers of people taking their doctors word at face value, accepting their ‘fate’ that the doctor has just imposed on them, is a sure way to end up dead, even if there were so many other healing tools available to explore. In my 10 years of having cancer, I have first hand met a shocking amount of people who were told at diagnosis that nothing can be done, enjoy the time they have left and ‘eat the cake while they can’ who then have the foresight to look outside of the box by doing lots of research and taking action who have gone on to live fulfilled healthy lives, beyond their given expiration date.

Remember that oncologists really do not have all the answers. They have a protocol to follow which is made up of pharmaceutical drug pushing and not much research outside of that. Do your own research, there are countless studies available online that you can find at a click of a button, there are facebook groups filled with people taking an ‘alternative’ route, sharing their knowledge and what has worked for them. Knowledge is power.

Not only will more knowledge empower you to make informed decisions and take the best steps available to you in your circumstance but it will also give you a sense of control rather than spiralling mentally and succumbing and submitting to outdated treatment protocols that are very likely to fail if you are doing those and those alone.

My top 5 tips to keeping a positive mindset and invoke inner peace whilst fighting cancer:

A Gratitude Journal

It is easy to start feeling sorry for ourselves and asking ‘why me?’ but by taking the time daily to focus on some things we have to be grateful for is a great way to shift our mindset. Some days may be harder than others to bring something to mind but even on those days, something as simple as being grateful for a comforting cup of hot tea is enough to shift the mindset into gratitude even for a short while and then reap the benefits of gratitude on our health. There is research to suggest that gratitude can increase our NK cell function!

Spending Time in Nature

This has been proven to lower cortisol levels, activate our parasympathetic nervous system (the rest and digest mode which promotes healing) ,boost the immune system by exposure to phytoncides emitted from the trees and plants as well as to the sun for a boost of vit d which is essential for immune health.

Meditation

Incorporating a meditation practice into our daily routine is a beautiful way to help keep us present and emotionally regulated. By taking 5-20 minutes a day to meditate whether that be in silence or using a guided meditation, it has been proven to decrease stress, enhance gratitude and have a positive effect on our immune systems by downregulating pro-inflammatory cytokines and boost the activity of NK cells. I highly recommend an app called ‘Insight Timer’. I use it daily and it has thousands of guided meditations or meditation music to choose from’

Breathwork

My breathwork practice is a very powerful tool to help keep me feeling calm and my nervous system regulated. There are a variety of breathwork practices for different benefits. The ones I utilise are for calming my nervous system and aiding detoxification. Again, I highly recommend downloading the Insight Timer app as there a hundreds of guided breathwork practices to choose from.

Yoga

Plenty of studies done demonstrate the facts that a regular yoga practice can balance your nervous system. Just 18 minutes of yoga to shut down cortisol production in our brain resulting in us feeling less stressed with more mental clarity. It trains us mentally and physically making us all round more robust and better equipped to fight.
